Life History of Joseph D. Medinger
Joe was born in Portland, Oregon, December 18, 1944, because his dad was working in the war effort there. His family was originally from Las Cruces and Clovis, New Mexico. He spent most of his early years there until moving to Tucson, Arizona, in high school. There began his life- long love for the University of Arizona Wildcats as he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees in History and Government. He was in the U of A Band (Bear Down, Arizona!), met his future wife Sue and they both played in the band at halftime of the first Super Bowl in 1967. On the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl, he was interviewed on TV about that experience.
After his commissioning into the Air Force and marriage to Sue, they began their Air Force life; being stationed in Colorado, Texas, California, and Vietnam. He retired after serving 23 years and became property manager for Century 21 Manor Realty, which he owned with his wife for 21 years. He started serving on boards, city council, and finally Mayor for two terms. He was considered an inspiration, someone you could count on and a steady force on city issues and problems. He was cool in the heat of local politics and, as a city official commented, taught others to care about things they didn't even know they needed to care about. He continued to be a part of other groups: Northeast Partnership, AACOG, and RAPCO. He also enjoyed working with his friends in Gideons as a member of Universal City Baptist Church.
He overflowed his bucket list with trips to his Ruidoso cabin, to Tucson for U of A Wildcat sports , taking courses of interest, working with the Alumni Band, walking in the foothills and connecting with his beloved Arizona family.
He loved his family well and was extremely proud of his only daughter, Sally Garza. He extended that love and care to his son-in-law, Daniel Garza; grandchildren, Hannah, David, Lydia, Joseph, and Nicholas; and great grandchildren, Riley and Luke.
A Celebration of Joe's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Universal City, on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the new Universal City Library and The Gideons International.
