Joseph R. Hager, 74, of New Braunfels, Texas passed away August 23, 2017 at home in the loving arms of family. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Joe was born April 18, 1943 in Bainbridge, New York the son of Harold and Margaret Hager. He was a graduate of Sidney Central High School class of 1961, Bachelor's from Mount St. Mary's University and Master's from the University of Northern Colorado. Joe proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Army. He served in the Aleutian Islands, Korea, Viet Nam, Germany and many posts throughout the United States. After he retired from the Army, he taught Junior ROTC at Jefferson High School in San Antonio for 15 years. Joe was a proud member of the Garden Ridge Lions Club. He served as president as well as many other positions. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship for his dedicated humanitarian services by the Lions Club International Foundation. Joe's love and passion was to give back to his military community. He was a member of the OLPH Military Ministry which serves the spiritual and personal needs of military members, vets and families. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Margaret Hager; brother, Harold Hager. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sharon Barnhart Hager; son Matthew Hager and wife Brandi of Cheyenne, Wyoming; daughter, Cathy-Ann and husband Andy McGee of Eagle River, Alaska; daughter, Christine Hager of New Braunfels, Texas; seven grandchildren, Weston, Cassidy and Paige Hager all of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Brady, Landry, Lily and Scott McGee all of Eagle River, Alaska; sister, Margaret Ann and husband Hank Steinmiller of North Carolina; brother, Thomas Hager and wife Terri of Sidney, New York; sister-in-law, Lenore Hager of Ohio; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jared and Arlene Barnhart, Israel and several nieces and nephews. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on September 1st at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 16075 N Evans Rd, Selma, TX 78154 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made too MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.
