Joseph Calvin Crownover III, Colonel, USAF (Retired) passed away February 7, 2018 at the age of 59. "JC" was born on February 19, 1958 in Texarkana, Arkansas to JC and Ruth Crownover. He was raised in Texarkana, Texas and graduated from Texas High School in 1976. JC attended the Millard School in Oregon and subsequently received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management in 1981. He also earned a master's degree in Computer Resource Management from Webster University and a master's degree in Strategic Studies from the Air University while attending Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
JC met Marie in Colorado Springs, Colorado and they married in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on February 12, 1982. JC 's thirty years of active-duty service in the United States Air Force exemplified his enthusiasm for life and his dedication to his country. JC and Marie travelled extensively throughout those 30 years while raising two daughters, Sarah and Amanda. Stateside they enjoyed assignments in Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Alabama, Virginia, and Washington. He held supervisory and command positions at the Space Readiness Center and the National Military Command Center at the Pentagon in Washington DC, and was Commander, 62nd Mission Support Group, at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, WA. They also served overseas in Spain, Germany, and Austria. He was the Air Base Commander, 496th Air Base Squadron, in Moron, Spain; the Deputy Commander, 86th Airlift Wing, at Ramstein Air Base in Southwest Germany; Chief of Staff at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Their last assignment was in Vienna, Austria where he represented the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) and served as Senior Military Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador.
In 2011, JC retired and their family moved to San Antonio, Texas. In early 2012 he accepted a position as the Division Chief for Operational Support of the Del Rio Sector with the United States Border Patrol in Del Rio, Texas. In late summer 2017, he transitioned to a DoD civilian position with the 502d Air Base Wing as a Community Initiatives Analyst at Fort Sam Houston in support of Joint Base San Antonio.
JC loved sharing his adventures with others. He and Marie often hosted family and friends in their homes across the U.S. and overseas. He was a consummate tour guide with a great appreciation and knowledge about the history and culture of his surroundings. JC was a true family man who adored his wife and daughters, his dogs Rusty and Maggie, a great cup of coffee, and a good book. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed sharing these passions with numerous friends. Whether hiking in Bavaria, skiing in Colorado, ziplining in Hawaii, or cruising the Texas Hill Country, JC lived life to the fullest.
JC's spirit, boundless energy, infectious personality, keen intellect, and zest for life are forever imprinted in the hearts and minds of all who had the joy of knowing him. He was a loving husband, father, brother, friend and loyal fellow soldier. He is survived by his wife, Marie Crownover; daughters, Sarah and Amanda Crownover; sisters, Nancy Wooldridge and husband John, Marcy Moore, Amy Roberts and husband Lamar; nieces and nephews, John Wooldridge, Emily Tenner, Thomas and Michael Moore, Madeline, Ben and Will Roberts; brother-in-law, Karl Fronda; sister-in-law, Irene Valencia and husband Art, as well as numerous cousins and countless friends.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Randolph Air Force Base Chapel No. 1 in San Antonio, Texas. Chaplain Damon Boucher and Chaplain Tina Henderson will officiate. Those attending the memorial service who do not have a military ID or common access card should allow time to register at the Randolph Air Force Base main gate visitor center.
Donations in memory of Joseph C. Crownover III may be made to Haven for Hope at https://www.havenforhope.org/Donate . Haven for Hope is a San Antonio-based organization that aids homeless individuals and helps fund funeral expenses for homeless veterans. JC often rode his motorcycle to funeral and interment ceremonies for homeless veterans to honor their service.
Interment will be at the U.S. Air Force Academy Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado at a date to be determined.
