Jose Lopez-Pagan

April 12, 1935 — October 6, 2019

On Sunday October 6, 2019, U.S. Army Master Sergeant Jose D. “Pepe” Lopez-Pagan received his greatest promotion ever when promoted to Heaven, at the age of 84. He was born on April 12, 1935 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, to Florencio and Emeregilda Lopez. Pepe was the oldest of four siblings. After graduating from high school, he worked for The Heinz Company until January of 1958 when he was drafted into the United States Army. During Pepe’s 21 years of service, as a medical records clerk, he did 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. After retiring, he was hired on as a civil servant and returned to his very same desk at the Brooke Army Medical Center, to serve for another 20 years.

On June 22, 1962, he married Pilar Diaz Gomez and together they raised 2 children, Jose and Pili. In his younger years, Pepe loved to spend his time off with his compadres, Army families that became lifelong friends. He enjoyed going to the beach, fishing, playing dominoes or pinochle, music and dancing. Almost every weekend, you could find him firing up the barbecue pit and having a cold one with friends. Pepe participated in many work projects with his compadres but mostly in the “supervisor” role. In his later years, he enjoyed helping his brother, Florencio, with remodeling projects (Florencio did all the labor and he supervised), taking walks around the neighborhood, sitting under his carport “supervising” all the going on’s in the neighborhood and chatting with his neighbors. He also enjoyed supervising his son in law and buddy, Bob, while he worked on cars as well as taking the mustang out for test drives. Most of all, Papi loved it when we would share pictures and updates with him of his grandchildren.

Pepe was preceded in death by his father, Florencio Lopez Torres; mother, Emeregilda Pagan and grand-daughter Divina Pilar Ryan. He is survived by his son, Jose Luis Lopez with wife Lisa; daughter, Maria del Pilar (Pili) Ryan with husband Bob; his treasured grandchildren, Bobby Ryan with wife Jourdan, Christopher Ryan with wife Sarah, Sean Ryan, Derek Lopez with wife Kelsey and Alicia Lopez; great granddaughters, Berklie, Olivia and Cooper; brothers, Juan Bautista Lopez Pagan and Florencio Lopez Conde; sister, Liccie Yolanda Lopez Conde; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Viewing will be held at 9:30AM with the Funeral Service to begin at 10:00AM on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Cornerstone Church -18775 Stone Oak Parkway San Antonio, TX 78258.
