John “Jay” Joseph Shuler, at the age of 83, went to be with God and his wife Carmella in Heaven on December 26, 2019, after struggling with kidney and bladder cancer. He was with family until the end at his home in Universal City.
He was born on June 10, 1936 in South Bend, Indiana to John & Marcine Shuler. He grew up in Keokuk, Iowa on the family farm. He had many stories about Mable the milk cow, the wandering girls-sows, and adventures on the Mississippi River with his friends. He always referred to himself as a “Iowa hog farmer!”
He married Carmella M. Mele on February 13, 1965 in New York. He attended Northern Iowa University and obtained degrees in Mathematics and Physics. He then went to Georgia Tech and completed a master’s degree in computer science. He joined the Air Force in 1959 and retired after 20 years. Then he taught computer programming at San Antonio College for 25 years, retiring in 2002. Jay’s hobbies included: woodworking, fishing, hunting and volunteering at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City.
Jay is survived by his eldest daughter: Rhonda M. Swift & husband Jim, and youngest daughter: Gayle J. Cuellar & husband Alec; grandchildren: Brittany A. Hepburn & husband Michael, Kristine M. Acevado & husband Eloy, Jessica M. Curtis & husband Jazz, Zachary A. Cuellar, and Aiden C. Cuellar; great-grandchildren: Landon C. Hepburn, Nicholas A. Acevado, and Logan C. Hepburn; younger brother: Larry Shuler & wife Tennie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmella in October 2006.
A Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00PM on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Schertz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30AM on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City, followed by a short reception. Graveside Services, with military honors, will take place at 1:30PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
A special thank you to Doris Hall & Jim E. Swift, Jr., who took dad to his appointments and cared for him during his illness.
