John Ray Renken, lovingly known as “Pops”, passed away on February 2, 2021, at the age of 58. He was born on March 03, 1962 in San Antonio, Texas to parents, David and Lillie (Fewell) Renken.
After graduating from John Marshall High School, John served nearly 4 years in the United States Navy, this allowed him to travel throughout the world. John began working in the commercial fire sprinkler business, which he continued to do for 30 years. He also owned a lawn care and landscaping business for a few years. John married Brenda on May 13, 1995.
John enjoyed camping with family and friends, and spending time at the lake, beach and river. He loved the outdoors from an early age but his true passion was riding motorcycles and he spent many weekends attending races, even after becoming a father. This love for the sport of motorcycle racing was passed down to his son and together they would attend events until a few years back. John waited his whole life to purchase his dream motorcycle, a Harley Davidson Street Glide. He was able to put 300 miles on it before becoming ill. John never met a stranger and could make friends anywhere he went; he received a heroic award from his company for saving a life. Anyone who knew John considered his smile, laugh and personality to be his finest traits – he was loved by so many.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Renken. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Brenda; son, Logan Renken with Kelli; stepsons, Clayton Verstuyft with Jessica, Ryan Verstuyft with Sarah; grandchildren, Jorge Cabasos, Trae Perez, Jaylee Verstuyft, Boone Verstuyft and Shae Verstuyft; father, David Renken; sister, Charlotte Renken with Gwen; nephew, Hunter Storm Renken; and granddog Lacey Renken.
A Visitation will be held from 3:00PM - 7:00PM on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Schertz Funeral Home. A private interment will take place at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
