John J. Harrison was born September 9, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa to Irene and George Harrison, passed away on September 23, 2018 at 90 years old. John went to Iowa State Teachers College earning a degree in Physical Education, while there he wrestled in 1949 at 121lbs and in 1950 at 115lbs where he won National AAU Individual championship and Team championship. His accomplishments were recognized when he was inducted into the Iowa State Wrestling hall of fame. In 1952 John joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served for 20 years as a Pilot. He was stationed in Texas, Mississippi, Okinawa and Kentucky. He was an Instructor Pilot flying T-33's and T-37's till he was sent to Vietnam where he flew the C-130 cargo plane and AC-130 gunship. John flew the Blind Bat Mission on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He came back to Texas and went back to being an instructor pilot in T-38's till he retired in 1972. While he was in the service he became a distinguished marksman in pistol shooting where he earned a Gold badge, Gold certificate and Marksmanship award in 1962, which gained him the honor of a New Nation Rifle Association Nation record. John went back to school at Southwest Texas State and received a second degree in Industrial Arts and Teacher certificate. He taught in San Antonio, Alamo Heights and Corpus Christi. He worked hard to get wrestling started in area schools, where he coached and referred for many years. In 1976 he and his wife opened up T&J driving school. The school taught thousands of children and adults to drive and was the only school in the area to teach the disabled to drive. The school was always a supporter of the area high schools and contributor for many years to the San Antonio Stock Show. John was a member of the RAFB officers club, Universal City American Legion, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a lifetime member of the Mesquite Trail Drivers Association. He won countless awards as the oldest male rider. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 52 years, Thelma J. Harrison; granddaughter, Desiree Faith Barnett. He is survived by his children, Glynda Barnett and husband James, Carrie Barritt and husband Shane, Lisa Ownby and husband H (deceased), Lequita Buckert and husband Andy, William Harrison and wife Elana Riedel, Darrell Harrison; grandchildren, Destiny Sutterfield and husband Randy, CJ Barritt, Aubrey McCraken and husband Andy, Deyanna Still and husband Paul, Patrick Pellerin and wife Jessica, David Pellerin and wife Becky, Kevin Pellerin and wife Teri; great-grandchildren,
Colton and Madeline Sutterfield, Makenna, Ella and Lauren Pellerin, Hunter and Luke Pellerin, Charlotte and Benjamin Pellerin, Pepper and Andrew (Fox) McCraken, Elli Still.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 8:30AM at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 10:00AM with Military Honors.
