John Curtis

September 3, 1938 — June 29, 2016

John Adrian Curtis peacefully departed this world on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at age 77. Born on September 3, 1938, to Marshall and Lilly (Linguist) Curtis, John spent his early childhood in Fort Worth, TX. John believed in the power of laughter. He never met a stranger and made friends easily. After he graduated from Arlington Heights High School, he and a friend joined the Navy to see the world which he did from the deck of the USS Boxer and the USS Hancock. Upon returning to Texas, John started his work career in Fort Worth at Union Finance; an office transfer to San Antonio established a new locale for his future life. John quickly recognized his aptitude for business and his enjoyment in dealing with a variety of people. At this time he started his own business, Curtis Car Care Equipment Co which he successfully managed for 24 years until his retirement in 2003.

Throughout his life, John belonged to many organizations. He was an active member of the Garden Ridge Lions Club, serving as President for one year. Later he received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award from the Lions. John also served on the City Council of Garden Ridge, Texas for two terms.

Early in life John developed a passion for motorcycles, in particular the Honda Goldwing. Seeking others who enjoyed riding, he organized the first Goldwing Chapter in Texas, Chapter H in San Antonio. He achieved Life Member status with Goldwing International and was currently a member of Chapter U.

Traveling was an intregral part of his life and John eventually became a Discovery Motorhome owner. As avid RVers, John and his wife Judy traveled extensively and took their Goldwing along. They explored Canada, parts of Mexico and all of the United States. They belonged to three camping groups where lifelong friendships were made. As volunteers, they worked for the State of Oregon at a wildlife preserve and a fish hatchery. John enjoyed the RV life so much that he became involved in the organization and served at Executive Vice-President of Discovery Owners Association, Inc.

Among his multiple interests, John also enjoyed raising cattle and cactus on his Medina County ranch, fishing anywhere, especially in Alaska and all the local lakes. Hunting with buddies was a favorite pastime and he would go anywhere to hunt game or tell tall tales. Later in life he also discovered the joy and aggravation of golfing. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Universal City he felt the need to give back to the community by working with the Needs and Seeds Ministry.

John was predeceased by his parents, a brother Robert Curtis and grandson Russell Hoffmann. He is survived by his loving wife Judy, whom he married on April 27, 1985; his sons Brandon Martin, Chad (Hasty) Martin; stepsons Michael (Louise) Hoffmann, David (Barbara) Hoffmann and Gregory Hoffmann. He is survived by brother Jerry (Joyce) Curtis and sister-in-law Barbara Curtis. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Lauren, Kaylee, Joel, and one great-grandchild, Grayson. Numerous family members and friends will miss him dearly.

Visitation: July 5, 2016, 4pm - 8pm at Schertz Funeral Home. Funeral Service: July 6, 2016 at 2pm. A private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
