John Coggins

John Homer Coggins passed away May 12, 2013 at Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 60. John was born in Hugo, Oklahoma to Paul Edward and Rebecca Cates Coggins on December 13, 1952. He was reared in Portales, New Mexico where he graduated from high school in 1971 excelling in band and drama. John then attended the University of Maryland, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and entered the United States Navy. While stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California, he met the love of his life, Cathy Jean Goodnough. They were married on December 5, 1981 and reared five children. While in the service, John was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for superior management and leadership in addition to many other distinguished awards. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1993, John and Cathy first moved to Oklahoma, then to the San Antonio area, settling in Converse, Texas, where John worked in operations and management for various retail establishments, utilizing his gift for leadership. John was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Universal City, Texas. During his life, Johns passions were his devotion to Jesus Christ and his family. He is preceded in death by his son, David Lewis Coggins; daughter, Lorelei Leigh Coggins-Kroger; and his father. In addition to his wife, Cathy, John is survived by a son, Timothy Heath (Desiree) Goggins of Pendleton, Oregon; daughter, Carol Anne McBride of Converse, Texas; daughter, Anita Louise (Stephen) Rickard of Oak Grove, Kentucky; and ten grandchildren; Bethanie Vasquez of Ozark, Arkansas; Madeline Coggins of Oceanside, California; Sonia Waterbury, Sierra, Rebecca, Rochelle, and John Joseph Rickard all of Oak Grove, Kentucky; Harleigh and Samantha McBride, and Kaelyn Coggins-Kroger all of Oak Grove, Kentucky. Also surviving are his mother, brothers, Paul (Regina) Coggins of Dallas, Texas and Mark (Wendy) Coggins of San Angelo, Texas; Sister, Cheryl (James) DeVoe of Hilton Head, South Carolina; father-in-law, David Goodnough of El Cajon, California; and brothers-in-law, David Michael (Tracy) Goodnough of San Marcos, California; and Gary Goodnough of Temecula, California; and seven nieces, one nephew and many cousins. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:00p.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Universal City. Interment will be in San Diego, California at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the F.B.C.U.C Coggins Memorial Fund, 1401 Pat Booker Rd. in Universal City.
