Johanna Amona Ching

June 27, 1936 – March 3, 2020

Beloved wife, mother, friend and joyful disciple of Christ passed away peacefully March 3 at Northeast Baptist hospital. Born and raised in Aiea, Hawaii, she graduated from New York University and soon afterwards married Edmund Ching, a fellow islander and an officer in the United States Army. As a dedicated military wife, she raised a growing family as Edmund’s Army assignments moved them to new experiences and locations.

Deepening and sharing her faith was of prime importance. She served as a devout example and raised her children in the Faith. She always was very involved with her home parish, serving in many ministries including as a sponsor for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the sick and home-bound, and a cantor and choir member at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Church in Selma, Texas.

Ensuring an excellent education for her children and grandchildren was also very important. Her greatest joy was raising and enjoying the company of three daughters and three sons, hauling them three times across the country while camping in tents, pop-up trailers, and RV’s. She enjoyed celebrating her Hawaiian and Chinese heritage. Her heart never left her beloved family in Hawaii, with annual visits to the Islands being a priority.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, her loving husband Edmund and youngest daughter Rebecca. She is survived by her sister Eleanor, daughters Anne Marie Weis (husband Larry) and Marguerite Klassen (husband Steve), three sons Edmund, Robert (wife Mary), and Michael. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Teresa (husband Jesse Bishop) and Adam Klassen, Christina and Patrick Weis, and Carson Ching.

Memorial visitation and viewing will be from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, March 10 at the Schertz Funeral Home, Schertz, TX

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 2 P.M. on Wednesday, March 11 with a Rosary to be recited at 1:30 P.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. There will be a reception following the Mass at OLPH.

She will be inurned with her husband, Edmund, at a future date at Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or your charity of choice.

“Well done, my good and faithful servant.”  (Matthew 25:21)
