Jerry Sue Godbout passed away unexpectedly after a very short illness on October 4, 2018. She was born on July 26, 1937 in Pikeville Tennessee, the youngest of 11 children born to William Darrus and Sarah Ann (Warner) Smith. She resided in San Antonio for the last 38 years and was a faithful member of Oak Hills Church.
She tragically lost both of her parents at an early age. Yet, despite that tremendous disadvantage, our Mom went on to become the most wonderful and loving mother who singlehandedly supported, nurtured and reared the three of us as best she could, even working multiple jobs at times. She was both father and mother and was always there for us, our biggest supporter. As a Grandmother she guided us in raising our own kids. She truly loved her family and was fiercely protective of us.
Our Mom was very bright. Between her desire to better herself and the lives of her children and her amazing agility and success in treating the many injuries of her very active kids, she decided to pursue nursing. She worked her way through nursing school, juggling classes, parental responsibilities and part time employment. Her strength, wisdom and tenacity saw her successfully through her studies and she then went on to pursue a 30+ year career as an RN. Her curiosity and desire to improve her skills led her to work in many different disciplines, including cardiology, orthopedics and urology. She absolutely loved being a nurse, so much so that she continued to work until she was 71.
Our Mom met the love of her life, Jim Godbout, at age 35. Jim introduced us to golf, which has become a life passion for us. He was instrumental in guiding her sons into Air Force careers. We are grateful to him for many things, but mostly for how much he loved our Mom. While our hearts are broken in losing her, we are so very comforted in knowing that they are thankfully together once again in heaven.
Mom lived a full life and strived to stay in shape by enthusiastically participating in yoga and water aerobics for seniors. She had quite the green thumb, boasting a beautiful collection of Christmas cacti. Her latest fun pastime was thrifting. She was really proud of her many amazing finds she discovered at the local thrift stores. She would steadfastly post her treasures on-line for her friends to see. Her favorite pastime was crocheting. Our homes are full of the beautiful and cozy Afghans she lovingly made for us and for our furry kids. She crocheted everything from intricate delicate doilies to washcloths. She even used her talents in Threads of Love to create handmade burial clothes for babies who did not survive childbirth. She wanted them to be buried in clothes that were made with love. She also made afghans for the Wounded Warrior program. She loved just about all sports and watched them avidly on TV. She was a UT Longhorn and Cleveland Browns fan, however, refused to watch the NFL over the past two years due to the player anthem protests.
She is preceded in rest by her parents, William and Sarah Smith, her beloved husband, Jim Godbout, her sisters Oma Lee Farmer, Belle Stonecipher, Elizabeth Pendergrass and Verna Franklin, her brothers, Jack, Beecher, Ivan, Verlon and Paul Smith and her half siblings Shirley, Hoyt and Billy Smith. She is survived by her brother, Farrell Smith, her three children Larry (Darcie) Akin, Gregory (Cindi) Akin and Mitzie (David) Katerndahl and her grandchildren Marc Akin, Sommer Akin, Jennifer Farar, William Foster, Shelby Wheeler, Tiffany (David) and Juliet Kallus, Tarah Katerndahl and Matthew Foster. She is also survived by Daniel and Ari Kimmelman.
