Over a 30-year military career, he served as a line medic, squad medic in an infantry, Ranger Support Battalion Platoon Sergeant, instructor, and multiple positions as a sergeant major. He has published two living documents titled Intertwined Roots Volume I and II.

He is preceded in death by his father, John Wilbert Butler, Sr., mother, Dezzie Marie Hammond; sisters, Gloria, and Ernestine; brothers, John Jr (Sarge) and Harold Sr.; and a host of other relatives. To carry on his legacy, Jeff is survived by his four sons, Damien (April), Brandon, Merick (Desiree), Matao; grandson, Jayden; two sisters, Beverly Little (Fredrick) of Mt. Gilead, N.C., and Cornelia Dowd (Michael) of West End, N.C., two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews, a non-biological daughter, Dr. Dominique Newallo and family; and many others that have been empowered by his leadership, mentorship, and guidance.
