Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel J.D. Tindall, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 20, 2021. Born to parents who were sharecroppers, Col, Tindall worked on his family’s farmstead in rural south Georgia until 1951 when he was drafted into the Air Force during the Korean war. He traveled the world during his military career, retiring in San Antonio, TX where he resided for the past forty-two years. He was strongly devoted to God, family and country.
Col. Tindall served his country for 28 years. He was an F105 fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, completing one hundred missions over North Vietnam. Col. Tindall received many awards and honorifics for his work and service including the Silver Star Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was especially proud that his son, Major Steve Tindall (ret.), and granddaughter Lt. Col Susie Lonsberry, Commander 7th Airlift Squadron, followed in his footsteps as USAF pilots.
Col. Tindall is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jane (Roberts) Tindall, his parents, Johnnie David and Mary Annie (Bankston) Tindall, and his brother Glenn Eugene Tindall. He is survived by brother, Ira Franklin Tindall (wife Ginger-deceased) and sister, Mary Emma (Tindall) Brown (husband, Clinton); his children: Steve Tindall (wife, Brenda), Carol (Tindall) Kyle (husband, Will), Tom Tindall (wife, Karen), and Charles Tindall (wife, Paula-deceased). He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Schertz Funeral on July 14, 2021. Visitation will be from 9:00 - 10:00 am, service at 10:00 am with the processional to Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery immediately following services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any memorial donations be made to your local Meals on Wheels or Alzheimer's Organization.
