Jay was active in his community, volunteering with the Samuel Clemens Band Boosters. He also sang in the San Antonio Chordsmen Barbershop Chorus.
After retirement, Jay worked various construction projects, built numerous log homes in the Texas hill country, and founded a successful animal feed additive business. Other than spending time with his family, he found a true passion in restoring antique Ford Model A automobiles. This led to him winning the prestigious Henry Ford Award from the Model A Restorers Club. He loved mentoring other Model A enthusiasts, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experiences with others.
Whatever project or interest Jay chose to pursue, he threw himself completely into it. He was always solving problems and striving for the best he could achieve.
Family was important to him, and he enjoyed spending time with children, grandchildren, and later, great grandchildren. When he could afford to build his dream home, it had to be big-enough room for family and friends to visit. Holidays were always celebrated at Pappa and Nana's house.
He loved gospel music, following the San Antonio Spurs basketball team, and watching the grandkids' extra-curricular activities.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; sons Rick (Jean), Andy Pettigrew (Claire McCracken); daughters Tammy Pearcy (L.C. Robbins), and Elizabeth West (Ronny); seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 11:00AM at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel with military honors.
A private family military burial will be held at a later date at Ft. Sam Houston.
