James Malone

December 19, 1926 — July 16, 2012

Col. James Joseph Malone, 85, of Windcrest, TX passed away on Monday, July 16, 2012. Born on December 19, 1926 in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of the late Earl Malone and Ethel Bayless Malone. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia Meisel Malone; loving children, Mike and Terri Malone and family, Patti and Rick Anderson and family, Marianne and Joe Lynch and family, Jim and Bonnie Malone and family, Steve and Kathy Malone and family, and Susan and Tom Pittman and family. He is blessed with 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. His daughter, Nancy Malone, preceded him in death. Col. Malone enlisted in the US Navy at age 18 and served for three years. He earned his engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology before being selected for Air Force flight school. After earning his wings, he served in the US Air Force as a fighter pilot and was a Viet Nam war veteran. His career spanned 31 years and culminated as the Base Civil Engineer of Chanute AFB, IL. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leak Clusters. Col. Malone, JJ, Daddy, Bop Bop, had a love for life, his family and his church. He was actively involved in every aspect of serving his community and his church; including the Windcrest Optimist Club and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to be involved with people and especially his children and grandchildren. Anyone that ever met JJ knew that he was something special, he left a smile and a place in their hearts forever. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Schertz Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00pm followed by a rosary to be recited at 7:00pm. A Mass will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 11:30am St. John Neumann Catholic Church in San Antonio. Interment will follow with full military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery, San Antonio.
