James Hawkins

James Edward Hawkins was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 14, 1918, son of Paul and Jessie McIntosh Hawkins. He passed away on February 16, 2013, at the age of 95. In 1931 the family moved to Wheeling, WV, and returned to Indianapolis in 1934. He received a journalism degree from Butler University in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 16 months, before receiving a medical discharge in 1943. He was a copy editor for the Indianapolis News for two years. On October 3, 1944, he married M. Edith Williams of Opelika, AL, in Norfolk, VA, where she was stationed in WAVES. They met in Opelika, while he was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. In 1946 they moved to Arlington, VA, where he became news editor for the Daily Sun. Their children, Ronald and Sherrell, were born in Arlington. In 1955 he purchased the weekly newspaper, The Register- Tribune, Union City,MI, which he published for 17 years, before selling the business. Before retiring in 1983 he worked for Tempo Buckeye store, Coldwater, MI, and Wells Fargo Security, Battle Creek, MI. In 1985 he and his wife moved from Union City, MI to Spicewood, TX and in 1999 to Schertz, TX where their daughter and family lived. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and former member of Rotary International, the American Legion, Indianapolis Press Club and Michigan Press Association. He is survived by his son: Ronald E. Hawkins and daughter Sherrell (Hawkins) Herdman and husband, Ray L. Herdman. Grandchildren: Carolyn Snyder and husband, Chad; and Lisa R. Herdman. Great- grandchildren: Gabriel, Alyssa and Evan Snyder. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith (Williams) Hawkins. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to The Country Church, P.O. Box 421, Marion, TX or to the charity of ones choice. Funeral Service will be provided by the Schertz Funeral Home and Crematorium. Family will receive visitors on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 from 10:00am to 11:30am at the Schertz Funeral Home. Graveside service and interment will be held at Haynie Flat Cemetery, Barton Creek Subdivision, Hidden Springs Ct, Spicewood, TX at 3:30pm on Tuesday.
