Irma Slate

June 9, 1940 — January 5, 2020

Irma Slate passed from this earth Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the age of 79 years.

Born to Reverend W. L. and Lois Basco in rural Louisiana, Irma's childhood was spent on a farm. Being a farm girl, church piano player, and high school cheerleader insured her future children would have both musical and sports opportunities, as well as a multitude of pets. After graduating high school, Irma married Donald B. Slate, an airman stationed at England AFB. Military life allowed Irma to travel as far North as Canada, and Mexico to the South. Four years in Germany allowed extensive travels throughout Europe, as well as a solo tour of the Holy Land. Irma had an artistic hand that allowed her to draw and paint. She decorated cakes for hire, and enjoyed ceramics; making chess sets and the "now” retro, lighted Christmas trees. She was an avid gardener, growing just about any kind of plant and flower. Some would say she had a green thumb, but those that knew her well, would say she had a green hand. Besides being a stay-at-home mom during her child-rearing years, Irma worked in various capacities for SCUCISD and later for Girling, performing in-home health care. Sadly, the last years of her life found her engaged in a no-win battle with Alzheimer's. Those that knew Irma, knew she was a multi-talented and passionate person. You would never find her giving a half-effort in anything she did. Her life affected many others in such a way, she will never be forgotten.

Irma was preceded in death by her parents W. L. and Lois Basco, and husband, Donald of 61 years. She leaves behind 4 children: Donald Slate Jr. and wife Laurie, Pamela Grinnell and husband Gerhard, Tommy Slate and wife Jan, and Stephen Slate and wife Michelle. Three siblings: brother W. L. Basco Jr. and wife Myra, 2 sisters, Peggy Dube, and Ramona Vinzant and husband Rodney. Nine Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
