Irene Vitols
February 15, 1927 — June 28, 2008
Irene Vitols, born on February 15, 1927 in Latvia, passed away on June 28, 2008 at the age of 81. She is survived by her husband of 53 years. Laimonis Lee Vitols of Converse, TX; daughter, Linda Hicks & husband, Larry of New Braunfels, TX; son, Erik Vitols & wife, Linda of San Antonio, TX, along with five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and spent her childhood years in Latvia going to school in winter and working on her favorite aunts farm in summer. During World War II, she and her family became refugees in Germany and after the war moved to America and settled in Minnesota. Irene had been a resident of Converse for the last 28 years. She was an avid gardener spending much of her time outdoors enjoying her garden in the long South Texas growing season. She had also lived in Illinois, South Carolina and Virginia managing to get a great garden and lawn going at each location. She made the best of being an Air Force wife; leaving a trail of greenery and multi-colored roses along the way. In addition to gardening, she enjoyed cooking, reading and photography. Her warmth and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Donald C. Ofsdahl officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
