Imelda Cantu

March 27, 1942 — March 13, 2020

On March 13, 2020, Imelda Cantu, of Schertz, Texas passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on March 27, 1942 in Eagle Pass, Texas, to Enrique and Oralia Rodriguez where she was the youngest of three children. She met her husband, Robert (Bob) Cantu, at Burbank High School in San Antonio, Texas. Within a year the two were engaged, married and remained passionately loyal to each other for 58 years. Imelda was a stay at home mom and raised their three daughters until her youngest was in first grade. Imelda then obtained a position at Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union where she held several positions during her tenure. After leaving Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union, she volunteered faithfully at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and was an active member of the San Antonio Conservation Society. Her greatest joy was supporting and attending her daughters and grandchildren’s activities and events.

Her personality was one of kindness, compassion, and loving her family fiercely. She was a devout Catholic with unwavering faith in God. She not only spoke these words but she lived them for her daughters to pass down to their children. She greeted all family and friends with open arms and a warm smile, including her daughter’s school friends that also called her mom. Throughout her life, Imelda had a passion for music as a pianist, taking every opportunity to play for family gatherings. She enjoyed walking, cooking, entertaining, traveling, especially to Vegas, and let’s not forget the cruises. She created a lifetime of memories for her family by always preparing for holiday gatherings. During Bob’s career in the Air Force, Imelda always represented and honored him at all events.

Imelda was cherished and deeply proud of her family. Her love will remain with her husband, Bob Cantu; three daughters, Cathy Cook and husband Tracy, Lisa Smith and husband Mike, Patty Flanders and husband Craig; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Imelda will be forever remembered by her extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Enrique and Oralia Rodriguez, her sister, Rosa Rodrigues, and brother Enrique Rodriguez who we know welcomed her home in heaven with open arms.

Family and friends will gather at Schertz Funeral Home for visitation on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM - the Visitation and Rosary will be limited to 50 people at a time in adherence to the CDC's recent recommendations for COVID-19.

A Celebration of Christian Funeral Mass will be conducted at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, Texas on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at 1:30 PM. A private, family only Committal Service will be conducted at Holy Cross Cemetery on Wednesday, March 18th, following Mass- due to recent CDC guidelines for COVID-19, the family regrettably will not be able to hold a reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made in Imelda’s name to the Alzheimer Association

The family would like to send a special thank you to Imelda’s caregivers, Benita Garcia, Georgeanna Garcia, and Lilibeth Kenedy for their care and protective hands as they gave peace and love to our family during this season of life.
