Hollie Hayes

December 17, 1958 — January 8, 2017

Hollie Marie (Tanner) Hayes, 58, passed away January 8, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Hollie was born December 17, 1958 in Everett, Washington to Robert Tanner and Patsy (Carr) Tanner. After high school, she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and joined the Navy. She served in many different posts in her Navy career, including one at the Navy Annex in Washington, D.C. It was there that she met her husband, Dennis. They married June 23, 1979 in Jacksonville, Texas and enjoyed over 37 years together. After leaving the Navy, she earned her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate. While she did not stay in the profession for long, she never lost her enthusiasm for helping others learn. Perhaps her greatest passion besides her family was her crafting. From ceramics and cross-stitch to painting and quilting, Hollie loved creating her own works of art. She'll always be remembered for her irrepressible free spirit, her love for birds and butterflies, and her hats, many of which were adorned with pins of all shapes and sizes. She saw the world like no one else, and being able to share her vision was a true pleasure. She is preceded in death by her parents, Viola Patsy (Carr) Tanner and Robert Willis Tanner. She is survived by her husband, Dennis, daughters Mallory Tanner and Wendy Force and husband Brian, brother Kevin Tanner and wife Debbe, and many other loved ones. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers from Meridian Care, Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital and Northeast Methodist Hospital who cared for this past year. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017, 9:00am, at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Schertz, TX, followed by an interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to donate to their local food bank and spend time with loved ones.
