Holden Neil Kuhns, 95, passed away on March 14, 2018, at the New Haven Memory Care Home in Schertz, Texas. He is survived by his sister, Isabel Van Horn and three sons, David and wife Becki, Neil and wife, Diane and Patrick and wife Beth, six grandchildren, Jason and wife Linda, Wesley, Kimberly and husband Spence, Emily, Vanessa and Ivan and four great-grandchildren, Jude, Zac, Holden and Kate. He survived his wife Mary by two years. Holden was born in Penns Creek, Pennsylvania on 10 April, 1922. He graduated from Mifflinburg High School. He entered the U.S. Army Aviation Cadet Program in 1943 and upon graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant pilot was assigned as an aircraft commander in the Mitchell B-25 bomber. His unit was part of the "Burma Bridge Busters" and operated in the China, Burma and India theaters. He earned an Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and two Distinguished unit Citations. He remained on active duty after WWII and transferred to the newly formed U.S. Air Force in 1947. He met and married his lifelong partner, Mary Elaine Kilpatrick, at Keesler A.F.B., Biloxi, Mississippi, on April 30, 1949. He served a one year tour of duty at Tan Son Nhat Air Base, Saigon, South Vietnam, from 1962-3. He was subsequently assigned to the 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Griffiss A.F.B., Rome, New York, as the Chief of Maintenance. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, in 1965 after serving 22 years. He moved his family to San Antonio, Texas and began work at Kelly A.F.B., as a Program Manager for the F100 jet engine which powered the F-16 and F-15 fighter aircraft. He retired from Kelly A.F.B. in 1992.
He and his wife embodied the attributes of the "Greatest Generation". They endured and survived a global depression,, they knew deprivation and danger serving in the armed forces and, victorious in battle, came back to begin the greatest growth and expansion of the United States.He lived a much disciplined life and quietly helped many people during their time of need. He was a true patriot, hero, husband and Father. Dad, we miss you and Mom. You gave us the best lessons in life and we are truly grateful. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, 1030am, at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
