Helen Wieters

October 31, 1950 — January 7, 2018

Helen Avery Wieters of Zuehl, Texas passed into eternal rest on Sunday, January 7, 2018. As a strong woman of faith, Helen always knew that she would one day be called home by God with open arms.

She was born on October 31, 1950 to Albert and Marybell
e Avery in San Antonio, Texas. She loved being a military child because of the many places she was able to call home, but fondly spoke of her summers on Petit Jean Mt, AR riding horses with her childhood friend, Charlotte Earl. Also while in Arkansas she love spending time with her Grandmother Byrd.

Her family moved back to the San Antonio area in in the late 60's and Helen was able to finish her schooling at Clemens High School. It was in her sophomore Biology class that she met the love of her life, Jerald Wieters. It was shortly after the two went to Alfred and Leonie Wiederstein's 50th wedding anniversary party that Helen realized that she loved Jerry and the community surrounding the people of Zuehl. She longed to put down roots and raise a family. Helen and Jerry were married on July 17, 1971 among family and friends at Chapel 1 at Randolph Air Force Base.

Helen began her career working for an accounting business, Alfred Thompson and Dibbler for a few years until the birth of her first son, Scott, in 1974. She was a devoted mother, and in 1978, her second son, Kyle, was born. Helen loved her two boys and the family enjoyed trips to the coast in their yellow Toyota, and playing in the Cibolo creek on Sundays after church. When the boys started school, Helen decided to go back to work. She joined the Bexar County Tax Office - Appraisal Service Division in 1981. In 1988 while both working full time and raising a family she decided to go finish her degree from Southwest Texas State University, graduating in 1994. She loved working with her friends and colleagues at the Appraisal office. In January of 2007, Helen decided to retire after 25 years of service.

In retirement, Helen found a new passion for research. She was interested in genealogy, and was able to trace her family's history to the signing of the Magna Carta. She was an avid gardener, and loved to work around the house on beautification projects. A lover of all animals, Helen was also known to pick up stray animals and adopt them as her own. She loved animals as fiercely as she loved her family. She also found a new group of friends surrounding the live music in San Antonio and New Braunfels areas. Fellow music fans and artist alike were always happy to see her at the concerts.

Helen was also a strong believer and follower of Christ. She was an active member of LIFT (Ladies in Faith Together), and would study the Bible to share the Good News with others. The group enjoyed her unique ability to take verses and apply them to today's world. Helen enjoyed her church family as well, especially the children she taught in Sunday School. She had a special bond with the community, and children would come to her house every Halloween to sing her Happy Birthday before they began their trick-or-treating. She was loved by everyone, big or small.

Helen is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jerald Wieters; two sons, Scott Wieters and wife Jodi of Temple, and Kyle Wieters of New Braunfels; four grandchildren, Cole, AnnaKate, Eleanor, and Gage Wieters; sister, Amy Belle and husband, Gary Schulz of Texarkana
