Harvey Fries

Retired Chief Master Sergeant Harvey Lee Fries of Schertz, Texas passed on the 13th of February, 2014 following a long battle with cancer. Harvey was born September 12, 1931 in Lincoln, Nebraska to John and Katherine (Katie) Fries. He was one of fourteen children; nine brothers and five sisters. He served 26 years in the United States Air Force that included tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1978 and began a second career in the civil service where he worked until age 59. Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, John and Katie, his brothers John Fries Jr., Herman Fries, and Victor Fries, and by two sisters, Helen Hansel and Pauline Gilles. He is survived by his wife, Lynda J. Fries, his children Kennith L. Fries and wife Janice, Teresa C. Madkins and husband Col. Lawrence H. Madkins, and his step-children, Jolyn V. DeMeritte, Steven W. Gwynn and wife Carolyn, and Michele E. Gwynn; his brothers Clarence (Dewey) Fries of Lakewood, Colorado; Jack L. Fries of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Marvin L. Fries of Greeley, Colorado; Larry Fries of Overland Park, Kansas; Eddie Fries of Winnemucca, Nevada; Florence (Vice) Treinen of Sidney, Nebraska; Dorothy (Toots) Frick of Greeley, Colorado; Susan Ross of Sidney, Nebraska; and his grandchildren Capt. Victoria L. Gebhardtsbauer, Kerri M. Dunsworth, Kristina A. Abbassi, Cory C. Gwynn, Nicole M. Bargas, Jessica L. Ippolito, Krista M. Madkins, Chelsea A. Madkins, Jacob E. Bush, Justin P. Bush, Christopher J. Gwynn; three great-grandchildren, Noah and Jase Dunsworth, and Julian Gwynn; and his beloved cats, Cassie and Susie. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 24, 2014, from 4:00PM - 8:00PM, at Schertz Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 9:00AM, at Schertz Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full honors. In lieu of flowers the family requests instead donations to either the American Cancer Society or Heart to Heart Hospice of San Antonio who provided comfort to Harvey and his family in their time of need.
