George Mixon

October 19, 1932 — July 5, 2019

Senior Master Sergeant George Neil Mixon passed away peacefully on July 5, 2019 surrounded by his family.  George was born in Watson, Louisiana, October 19, 1932. He joined the Air Force in 1952 before marrying the love of his life Mary Varner in 1955.  Together they had 7 children, 14 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 10 great step-grandchildren.  George served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and also had tours in the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey and many stateside US military installations.  He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and numerous other metals. He retired after 26 years.  They settled in Marion, Texas, where they built their dream home together.

George was an amazing person with a wide variety of interest and talents.  He worked on cars at the early age 8 tinkering on anyone’s he could get his hands on.  Motorcycles were his true love though. He would be found cruising N. 7 th Street in Baton Rouge, LA  with his brother’s bike – eventually he bought his own which he named “Honey “.  He played steel guitar and sang in various bands.  On military tour oversees, he took his guitar and started his own country/western band with some troops.  He brought joy to many singing songs and harmonizing.   He initiated hootenannies everywhere he went and loved to dance.  In Abilene, TX they would go dancing at the “midnight ballroom” which was a room in their converted garage.  He was a B-25 and B-47 aircraft mechanic, later worked on atlas missiles, then worked in communications.  At 65 he decided to get his pilot license and owned 2 airplanes.  He was a member of the (AOPA) Aircraft Owners & Pilot Assn.  After retiring from the Air Force he and Mary started a custom draperies business which operated for 15 years.  He was a Eucharistic minister at church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary V. Mixon of Marion,Tx., 7 children: Veronica Mixon of San Antonio, TX., Margaret (Murray) Mixon-Daw of Anderson, South Carolina, Barbara (Thomas) Richeal of Vacaville, California, Debra (Charlie) Gautreaux of Leonville, Louisiana, Pamela Mixon of San Antonio, TX., G. Neil Mixon, Jr. of Smithville, TX and Beverly (John) Keller of Humble, TX., and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Kathleen Blanchard of Sequin, Tx  and Carolyn Marcotte of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Preceded in death by his parents Sem Eugene Mixon and Eva Cecilia Hill Mixon and 8 siblings; Ardelle Stacey ,Lila Abels, Aline Usky, Juanita Kardys, Helen Leininger, Carl E. Mixon and Murray Mixon.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-9:00PM on Friday, July 12 th , at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel, with a Rosary being recited at 7:00PM.  A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 11:00AM on Saturday, July 13 th , at Randolph Main Chapel #1, located on Randolph Air Force Base.  (Please plan to arrive in time to process through the Visitors Center at the main gate.)  Graveside Services, with full military honors will take place at 9:45AM on Monday, July 15 th , at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, at Shelter #5, in San Antonio, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the following: Disabled American Veterans , VFW , Salvation Army , Hope Hospice of New Braunfels or Randolph AFB Catholic Church.
