Gary Ross Gauntt, 70, passed away peacefully with Chaplain Tony by his side at Kindred Hospice In San Antonio on the morning of August 2, 2017 after succumbing to lung cancer. He was born in Lakeland, Florida on May 17, 1947 but lived most of his life in Texas (San Antonio, then Schertz).
Gary was a researcher, inventor, and deep thinker. He loved (and during his lifetime owned a few) 1957 Chevys. Back in the day, he used to hang out at the Bun-n-Barrel and win drag races on Austin Hwy. He also had a passion for motorcycles and could build them from the ground up. Friends often sought his mechanical expertise and advice. Few things brought him more joy than a solitary bike ride on a
Sunday
morning. Eventually, he sought the company of good, reliable trucks that were old enough for him to work on without leaving the comforts of his own meticulously organized garage. He was passionate about music, and spent many hours searching for the right speakers and equipment to create precise and powerful sounds throughout his house. He was an avid thrift store and Goodwill shopper and always found treasure; he had an affinity for antique glass--particularly "opalescent hobnail."
Gary was a loyal servant to San Antonio and Bexar County, working for many years as a court clerk then as the evidence clerk/supervisor in the main courthouse of downtown San Antonio. His thorough attention to detail and amazing organizational skills garnered him much respect.
He was inspired by inventor/engineer Nikola Tesla. He centered his religious beliefs on Christianity and found comfort and acceptance in the writings of the Gnostic Gospels of St. Thomas.
Gary is survived by his daughter Carie Hardin and her husband Darren and his grandchildren Lindsey and Cristina. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn and her husband Mike (and their children and grandchildren); his brother Patrick and his wife Larna (and their children and grandchildren); his brother David and his wife Sandi.
He surrounded himself with a small group of loyal friends: his devoted and loving neighbors, Albert and Rachel Pena; his lifelong friends Ruben Breig and Charlie Grammer; mother-figure Faye Morris; dear friend and former co-worker Angie Garcia.
Per Gary's wishes, a private prayer/blessing memorial was held by the family.
