Garland Mccarley

April 6, 1936 — January 8, 2018

Garland Haywood McCarley went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 8, 2018. Garland and his twin sister, Gernell, were born on April 6, 1936 at his maternal grandparents' farm in Orange Grove, Texas. Gernell died in February 1937 of pneumonia. Their parents were Herbert McCarley and Alice Hauck. In 1942 the family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Garland graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1954. It was in high school that he met the love of his life, Janet Winters. They married on September 29, 1956 and enjoyed a loving marriage of 57 years. Garland and Janet enjoyed living on Lake Placid in Seguin, Texas for over 20 years. They lost their home in the flood of 1998 but rebuilt and enjoyed another 10 years of great times with family and friends. Their granddaughters grew up there.

Garland worked for San Antonio Savings for 25 years in the Computer Data Center. He was a member of the 149th Fighter Group in the Texas Air National Guard from 1954 until 1962. He was also a Bexar County Deputy Sheriff Reserve for several years. He coached baseball in the Windcrest Little League for 12 years from 1966-1978. Garland and Janet were able to travel some. They went to Hawaii and on 5 cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. Garland and Janet were active in their church and attended mass at OLPH (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) in Selma, Texas. They were also active in the Senior Center in New Braunfels, Texas. Garland loved to hunt and fish with his dad and brothers. He started working at the age of 12 and always worked hard to support his family, and many times held more than one job.

Garland was very close to the Lord. His great joy was his family. He took very loving care of Janet when she was disabled. His three children were his pride and joy. He wanted so much for them to all finish college and receive a good education and they all did. Then were his granddaughters, his "river rats" he called them. They brought each other so much joy spending time together at the lake. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Garland was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, his parents and his grandparents, his twin sister, Gernell, and his brothers, Harold Eugene McCarley and Douglas "Butch" Wayne McCarley. He is survived by his three children; Darrell McCarley, Cindy Barnhart, and Russell McCarley and their respective spouses, Cindy Mueller, Rod Karch and Karen McCarley, his grandchildren Ashley Barnhart, Aubrey Barnhart and spouse Jake Northam, Amy McCarley, Amber McCarley, Brittany Waterbury and her spouse Ryan and Rachel McCarley, great grandchildren Braeden and Braxton Northam, and Carolina Ramirez and another great grandchild due in April.
