Frederick Schlather

November 11, 1937 — July 22, 2011

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. (Mt. 11:28) After a long illness Fritz Schlather gratefully accepted Christs invitation on Friday, July 22nd and entered into Eternal rest. Frederick Sydney Fritz Schlather was born November 11, 1937 in Cibolo, Texas. He was the second son of Ernst and Elaine Schlather. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ernie Schlather. Fritz grew up in Cibolo where he attended elementary school. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1956. Following graduation from Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) he was a commissioned officer in the Air Force from 1962 to 1965. He and his wife, Sandra Hovey Schlather, were married in 1966. They and their two children, Erick and Liesl, and numerous treasured pets, including a very special buffalo named Samson, lived for many years on a farm off FM 1103 in Cibolo. Fritz was personally responsible for buying and planting over 100 Texas Live Oak trees that now grace many streets and neighborhoods in the City of Cibolo. The Schlathers moved to Garden Ridge in 2006. Fritz was president of the Cibolo State Bank from 1968 until 1982 and served as Chairman of the Board and CEO from 1982 to 1987. In 1987 he became President of the Garden Ridge State Bank, a position he held until his retirement from banking in 1995. From 1997 until his death, Fritz was a real estate broker, establishing Schlather Realty, specializing in commercial and ranch property. Always a believer in community service, Fritz served as mayor of Cibolo from 1969 to 1977. In 1972 to 73 he served as President of the Schertz-Cibolo Chamber of Commerce. From 1979 to 1989 he was a Trustee of the Gonzalez Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, serving as Board President from 1986 to 1988. In 1980 he was a Director of Guadalupe County Mental Health-Mental Retardation program, and chaired its building committee. He was President of the Greater Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce from 1980 to 1981. Fritz was always a passionate advocate of water conservancy and served on many local water agencies during his career. He was a Cibolo Creek Municipal Authority director from 1991 to 1993, Director of the Green Valley Special Utility District from 1993 to 1997, Director of Canyon Regional Water Authority from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, the then Governor George W. Bush appointed him to serve as a director on the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority Board. In 1999, Fritz was the recipient of the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative Public Service Award. Mr. Schlather is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Frederick Burton Schlather and his fiance, Stacie Hill, of San Antonio; daughter, Liesl Schlather Kuby and her husband, Karl Kuby III, of Dallas; grandchildren: Sydney Kuby, Drew Schlather, Kaky Kuby, Ellie Schlather, Trey Kuby and soon to be grandchildren, Marian Hill and Martita Hill. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, TX.
