Evelyn Winkler

March 13, 1921 — August 28, 2015

Evelyn Irene "Granny" Winkler found eternal peace at sunrise on Friday, August 28, 2015. She died comfortably surrounded by her family in San Antonio at the age of 94. Born on March 13, 1921 in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, Evelyn was the 10th of 16 children. She graduated high school from the Louisiana Methodist Orphanage in 1939 and went on to work at the LSU beauty school for three years. Evelyn enlisted in the Army on April 1, 1943. The Army realized how lucky they were to have such a beauty and immediately had her model for them in an effort to enlist new recruits. It was there where she met her beloved husband, Jack, who was working as a skeet instructor. They were married on February 12, 1944. Her devotion to family was an inspiration to all who knew her. She loved cooking for her family more than anything and the more the merrier. Once she knew who would be over at mealtime, she was sure to make their favorite dish, oftentimes having 10 or more dishes on the table! Grandchildren usually spent entire weekends at her home, where they would be spoiled with coffee milk in bed and German pancakes for breakfast. She was an avid golfer and spent most of her weekdays on the golf course, rarely playing less than 18 holes, even after she reached her 90s. She hit 5 holes-in-one, and in her words "now isn't that something!" She loved the outdoors, planting flowers and gardening, and she especially enjoyed it when neighbors and loved ones would stop by for coffee and a nice long visit on the porch. She is preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Allen Jack Winkler of Hondo; her parents, Charles and Louisa Hutchinson and 14 siblings. She is survived by her brother and his spouse, Odis & Annie Laurie Hutchinson of Alexandria, LA; two sons and their spouses, John C. "Jackie" & Virginia Winkler and Larry W. & Cynthia Winkler; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Toy & Ned Brand, Holly & Brady Urbanek, Heidi & Mike McCullick, John Winkler, Jacob Winkler, Jessica & Breck Harmel, Joshua Winkler, Joseph & Jana Winkler; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also, loving family member, Thelma E. Stiner. A Memorial Service will be held at 3pm. on Monday, August 31, at the First Baptist Church in Hondo. Memorials may be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home, PO Box 929, Ruston, LA 71273. You are invited to sign the electronic guestbook at www.schertzfuneralhome.com
