MSgt. Eugene G. Freiert "Gene" USAF (Ret.) passed away on September 23, 2015, at the age of 65. He was born on May 19, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. Eugene joined the United States Air Force early in his life, served faithfully and retired after 21 years and 28 days of active duty. During his service, Gene received his Associate of Applied Science in Data Processing from the Community College of the Air Force. Sergeant Freiert's military decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal, with two oak leaf clusters; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon; Air Force Longevity Service Award, with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Training Ribbon. After his retirement, he worked as a contractor for the government for 5 years; he also worked as a Civil Service employee for 21 years, with over 45 years of dedication to the U.S. Government. He was a proud third degree active member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6358 in Schertz, Texas. He enjoyed going fishing, was a Season Ticket Holder of the San Antonio Spurs, and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Missions and the Texas Longhorns. Gene was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy L. Freiert of Universal City, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife, Yolanda M. Freiert; son, Eric J. Freiert and wife Nicole of Converse, Texas; sister, Retsy; brothers, Dan, John, Paul, Larry, Joe and Greg; grandchildren, Nathan, Ansley, Aaliyah and Alisha Zuniga, Gianni, Emily, and Anthony Freiert; numerous loving nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 from 5:00pm until 9:00pm with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00pm. There will be a Funeral Mass held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 9:30am with Father Ed Pavlicek officiating. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
