Elizabeth (Betty) Anne (Carl) Roberts, born January 29, 1925, in Shickley, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2016, in Schertz, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Adelia Carl of Geneva, Nebraska; her brothers Cletus Carl of Hays, Kansas, Robert Carl, of Geneva, Nebraska, and William Carl, of The Woodlands, Texas, and her loving husband, Arthur, with whom she was married for 57 years.
She is survived by her brother, John Carl, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and by her 5 children, including daughters Joan and husband Mike Berthelson of Georgetown, Texas; Patricia and husband Ernest Degenhardt of Temple, Texas; and sons Clifford Roberts of Tinley Park, Illinois; John and wife Cathy Roberts of St. Augustine, Florida; and Ron Roberts of Highlands, Texas. She is survived by 6 grandchildren and 5 (and ) great grandchildren as well. In addition to these, she is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews who were very beloved by their Aunt Betty.
Betty loved to sing and received many awards and scholarships to pursue her musical career after high school. While not pursuing music, she maintained a lifelong love and sang in many choirs in the various places she lived. After working for a year in Omaha for the Union Pacific Railroad, she decided to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the former St. Catharine's Hospital School of Nursing, now Creighton University, in 1948. In 1949, she met and married the love of her life, Arthur Roberts, and they moved to Hays, Kansas. During her long nursing career, Betty worked as an operating room nurse, hospital nursing supervisor, and as the Ellis County school nurse. While working full time and raising her 5 children, Betty obtained her Bachelor Degree in nursing from Fort Hays State University (FHSU)
In the late 1960's, Betty was asked to teach Community Health Nursing at FHSU. To enable her to teach at that level, she spent two summers at Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas to obtain her Master of Science Degree in Nursing. While teaching at FHSU, she set up two community meal site clinics to assist with health education for the elderly. She was a contributor to a nursing book, "The Practitioner/Teacher Role", published in 1980 about the meal sites. These meal sites continue to be an integral part of the eldercare in the Hays community. Betty also taught at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, and completed her career at the University of Wyoming. In 2009, Betty was awarded the "International Legacy of Caring Award" for those projects.
When they retired in 1987, Betty and Art returned to Lincoln where Betty was very active in the St. Ann's Society and prison ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In 2000, she and Art moved to Highlands, Texas to be closer to family. Since 2010, Betty was a resident at the Autumn Winds Retirement Lodge in Schertz, Texas. Many thanks to the staff at Autumn Winds for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided to Betty during those years.
Betty will be deeply missed by her family, relatives and friends who were blessed by her example of selfless giving.
