MSgt. (Ret) Edward "Buck" Zehringer, born April 29, 1918, in Philadelphia, PA, passed away June 13, 2016, at his home in Schertz, Texas, at the age of 98. "Buck" grew up in Atlantic City, NJ, where he spent 2 years of high school, then enlisted in the U.S. Army in March of 1941. In March of 1943, he was sent to North Africa and then on to Italy, returning from WWII in October of 1945. "Buck" served his country for 31 years, 16 of them spent overseas. He was very well decorated having served 2 tours in WWII, 5 tours in Vietnam, earning him 3 Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal and a Bronze Star. "Buck" retired from the Air Force in February 1974 in Taipei, Taiwan where he remained to teach English for four years. He returned to the U.S. in 1978, and moved to Schertz, TX, in 1980. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross for 30 years in California and at the Randolph Dental Clinic, accumulating over 40,000 hours of volunteer work. "Buck" is preceded in death by his parents, Augustus and Mary Zehringer; and 3 siblings. He is survived by his children, Jan Ash, Marlene Ybarra (Wayne), Beverly Zehringer (Tony Ybarra), and Edward R. Zehringer (Valerie). He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and longtime friend and caregiver, Dr. Jay Rossell. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any memorial donations be made to Hospice Compasses at 4243 Tiedras, Suite 120, San Antonio, TX, 78228.
