Edward Wheaton

Edward Charles Wheaton passed away peacefully at his home in Cibolo TX, Nov 30, 2012. Funeral service will be at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove, MO., on Sat, Dec 8, 2012, 12:00-2:45 P.M. services. Interment following at Oak Grove Cemetery. There will be a wake on Fri at Royer Funeral Home for family and friends from 3-5 PM. Mr. Wheaton will be buried with full military honors. Mr. Wheaton, born in Adrian, MO, 1926, graduated from High School in Oak Grove, MO. He is a graduate of Texas Lutheran College. The eldest of five children, he is the namesake of his two grandfathers: Edward Clint Wheaton and Charles Culver. In the mid-1940s he was employed by the Stearman Aircraft Company installing wings on biplanes. Boeing purchased Stearman and Mr. Wheaton began work on the B-29s. He was drafted into the Army Air Corp in 1944. He began his service with Squadron 749 of the 8th AF in WWII where he flew as flight engineer on B-17s. He is a veteran of the three wars: WWII, the Korean and Vietnam wars. While in the service with the USAF, he had the opportunity to take his famly to Japan, Libya, Hawaii, and Texas. He retired from the USAF in 1970. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. After 26 years of serving his country, Mr. Wheaton accepted a position with IRS and retired in 1990. Mr. Wheaton was actively involved in the BSA as Scout Master and Assistant District Commissioner, Washington Area National Council (WANC), Patawomeck District, for 20 years. As Scoutmaster of Troop 667, he took pride in the accomplishments of the scouts, many of whom achieved the rank of Eagle. In 1990 he was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club, McLean, Va., for his support and dedication to youth and youth programs. He was preceded in death by his parents: Oscar Wheaton and Mamie (Culver); survived by his wife, Betty (Offutt) with whom he enjoyed over 60 years of marriage; his children: Mary Beth Roots (Dave); Linda Smith (Dave), and Edward K. Wheaton (Sandra). He leaves behind 9 grandchildren: Christine Atteberry (Dylan); Elizabeth Roots, Tyler Smith, Alex Smith, Daniel Smith, Matthew Smith, Jessica Wheaton, Nicholas Wheaton, and Nathaniel Wheaton; two great grandchildren: Taylor Starlin and Kassidy Kelly. He has four surviving brothers: Kay Wheaton (Nellie), Glen Wheaton (Dixie), Keith Wheaton (Marti), and Kent Wheaton (Jane).
