Edith Hawkins

M. Edith Williams Hawkins passed away on June 12, 2009 . Edith was born August 25, 1917 in Tallassee, Alabma to Henry Curtis Williams, Sr., and Amanda Spivey Williams. She graduated from Tallassee High School in 1936, and of Edmondson Business School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Edith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Yeoman First Class and was married to James E. Hawkins on October 3, 1944. Also surviving are her children, Ronald Edward Hawkins of San Antonio and Sherrell Ann Herdman and husband Ray of Schertz, Texas; Grandchildren, Carolyn Marie Herdman Snyder of Houston and Lisa Rae Herdman of San Antonio, Texas; Great Grandchildren, Gabriel Ray Snyder, Alyssa Lynn Snyder, and Evan Michael Snyder. Edith and her husband, James, published the weekly newspaper, THE REGISTER TRIBUNE in Union City, Michigan for 17 years. She was an active member of the Union City Congregational Church, and a charter member of the Martha Circle. She spent time working with the youth groups of the church, and with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She and her husband moved to Spicewood, Texas in November of 1985, where she was an active member of Spicewood Baptist Church. They moved to Schertz, Texas in 1999 where she was a member of Schertz First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Antonio Alliance for the Mentally Ill or Schertz First Baptist Church. Visitation will be Monday, June 15th from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Schertz Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 16th at 11:00 AM at Schertz First Baptist Church . A Graveside Service will be Wednesday, June 17th at Haynie Flat Cemetery, Spicewood, Texas at 3:30 PM.
