Douglass Martin Hurt, LTC, USAF (Ret.) was born in Dallas, TX on February 1, 1921 and went to be with his Lord on January 17, 2016, just short of his 95 th birthday. In 1968 he retired after 25 years in the United States Air Force. He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. After his military career he worked as an engineer at the Texas State Health Department in Austin and then at a private engineering firm in Houston. Doug was privileged to have traveled in the U.S. as well as many foreign countries and he loved every minute of it. To the end he was curious, interested and loved life. Although blind during his last years he never complained, gave in to his infirmities or allowed them to diminish his desire to get up and greet each day with optimism. He was a man of great courage and mental strength. His honor and integrity will be well remembered by those closest to him. Doug was preceded in death by his parents Eldridge and Mabel Scott Hurt, his brother Wilbur Hurt and his first wife Mary Lea Swearingen Hurt. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Wilma Durham Hurt, as well as many loving family members. Visitation will be held at the Schertz Funeral Home on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at 8:30am, also at the Schertz Funeral Home, with the interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his wife requests that memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
