Capt. Douglas Boyd Kelley (Doug), born on January 6, 1953, passed away on October 28, 2016, at the age of 63. Douglas graduated from SWTSU with a BS in Education. He taught American and Texas History and coached football, basketball, track and soccer for twenty-four years. Douglas worked for San Marcos CISD, San Antonio ISD and Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD. Doug served proudly in defense of his country for twenty-six years. He enlisted in the Navy at age eighteen and served nine years. He then took a commission in the Army and after serving in the Army, The Oklahoma National Guard and Reserve, and the Texas National Guard and Reserve, he achieved the rank of captain and served as battery commander in both Oklahoma and Texas. Douglas also worked for five years with the Chickasha OK police department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, leather work, and knife-making. He loved God, family and his country. Douglas is preceded in death by his parents, Byrl U. and Betty M. Kelley and father- in law, John Gibbens. He is survived by his loving wife, Rachel Kelley of Schertz, TX; son, Matthew Kelley and wife Lyndsay of San Antonio,TX; daughter, Maggie Burton and husband Zachary Burton of Sugarland, TX; mother-in-law, Lou Gibbens of Bulverde, TX; brother, Pete Gibbens and wife Mary of La Vernia, TX and Dan Gibbens and wife Jeri of Bulverde, TX; sisters, Jeannie Menaker of Fairbanks, AK and Joyce Thomas and husband Bill of Haines, AK; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at Schertz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016, at 10:00 AM, at Schertz Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any memorial donation be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Rebecca Creek Baptist Church building fund located in Spring Branch, TX.
