Donald Meyer
November 7, 1932 — April 1, 2009
Donald Ray Meyer, former resident of Schertz, passed away April 1, 2009 after fighting a brave battle with cancer. He has risen on Eagles Wings and is with our Lord Jesus as the popular song goes. He was 77 years young. Don was born on November 7, 1932 in Leslie, Missouri to Emil and Emma Meyer. He was a happy child who dreamed of serving his country, and that is exactly what he did. MSGT Don Meyer served in the Army for 20 years, with tours in Germany and Korea. After he retired, he continued to serve the Army by working as the Manager of the Fort Sam Houston Recreation Area at Canyon Lake. An avid fisherman, this especially suited Don as he was able to fish for the Big One in his spare time, between work and family. Not many Big Ones got away from Don Meyer or the Fishstick as he was so amply named in his CB handle driving down I-35 to his home in Schertz. He was well known for his famous catfish and bass Fish Fry dinners made from his conquests on the area lakes and rivers. Gardening was also one of Dons favorite pastimes. Farmer Meyer loved growing vegetables and sharing the experience with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved country and western dancing, and it would be hard to find a smoother, more handsome cowboy on his feet. He loved to play cards and dominos with family and friends. He would often chuckle as he tried to sneakily stack the deck in favor of others or himself. He was a kind and generous man to all, never failing to think of others before himself. Don was preceded in death by his father Emil Meyer, his mother Emma Grob, his wife Patricia Meyer, and his grandchildren Allan Vega and Esperanza Vega. Don is survived by his loving children Don Meyer Jr., Debbie Hastey, and Tina Vega; his Daughter-in-Law Susan Meyer; and his Sons-in-Law Sullivan Hastey and John Vega. He is also survived by eight beautiful grandchildren: Zachary Meyer, Matthew Meyer, Katy Meyer, Skye Hastey, Sierra Hastey, Nathaniel Vega, Nicole Vega, Solomon Vega and a Granddaughter-in-Law Leah Meyer. Visitation will be held April 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 F.M. 3009, Schertz, Texas 78154. The Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday April 9 at Schertz Funeral Home followed by 11:30 a.m. grave side services at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Donald Meyer Jr., Zachary Meyer, Matthew Meyer, John Vega, Sullivan Hastey, and William Sweaney. Family and friends reception after the service will be held at Schertz Community Center, 1400 Schertz Parkway, Bldg. #5- Bluebonnet Hall. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Dons name.
