David Ledum

David John Ledum was born November 5, 1963 to Clare and Dorothy Ledum . He died January 4, 2018 in his home in Cibolo , TX at the age of 54, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle against brain cancer.

Dave Ledum was born in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. He then became an officer in the United States Air Force. He served for 20 years as a pilot where he earned the nickname " Chewie ". He flew the B-52, the T-38, the KC-10, the T-1, and the KC-135. He earned the rank of Major. He retired in August of 2006.

In 1990, Dave married Karla Herslip . They were happily married for 27 years. With Karla, he had five daughters. He was the epitome of a family man doing whatever he could to show his love. When the girls were little, he could often be found sewing matching outfits for all of his girls, Karla included. When the girls were older, he orchestrated birthday parties, applied eyelashes for dance competitions and attended each and every extracurricular event from dance and band competitions to volleyball tournaments.

Dave was an active member of his church, King of Kings Lutheran Church. He worked with the youth and served as an elder of the congregation. Dave was also actively involved in Girl Scouts and served as the "Cookie Dad" for several years.

After retiring from the Air Force, Dave was an instructor with Flight Safety International. He worked at the company for 9 years. In 2016, Dave started flying for United Airlines.

In July of 2016, Dave was diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiforme . He fought long and hard against the aggressive brain tumor. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband, as well as a leader in his community. Dave is survived by his wife, Karla, his five daughters, Alexandra, 24, Kassandra , 22, Julianna , 17, Victoria, 15, and Natasha, 14. He is also survived by his sister, Kathrine Ledum , British Columbia, Canada, and his mother, Dorothy Ledum , San Antonio, TX.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00PM on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Schertz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30AM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at King of Kings Lutheran Church. Graveside Services, with full military honors, will be held at 10:00AM on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
