David Cunningham

August 3, 1941 — April 4, 2018

David Andrew Cunningham, United States Air Force (Retired) passed away April 4, 2018.

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on August 3, 1941, he grew up in Denver, Colorado. He enlisted in the US Navy upon graduating from high school before his eighteenth birthday. He served three years and continued his military career by joining the US Air Force. After retiring, he earned a teaching certificate and taught high school special education until retiring in 2002.

Dave loved sports and in high school was captain of his basketball team, leading them to a state championship among Catholic high schools. While serving in Vietnam in the late 60's, Dave became a long-distance runner. His running became a passion and part of his daily life. Some of his running accomplishments included representing the Air Force in nationwide competition, four marathons and a multitude of 10K races, garnering many trophies and awards. We believe that had all his worn-out running shoes been lined up, they would stretch from California to New York.

Dave's father David W. Cunningham was a professional artist and oddly or not, Dave discovered in his retirement years that he himself was artistically-inclined. He drew pictures that he shared with nursing home residents that he visited, friends and family. One of his favorite pastimes was having drawing sessions with his granddaughter Eme who is exhibiting tremendous artistic talent.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents David W. and Juanita Cunningham. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lucy; sons Robert(Eleanor); Stephen(Grace); granddaughters Eme, Ada, Natalia and Alyssa; sisters Nita Spencer(Keith) of Chadron, Nebraska and Bernadette Ortiz(Ray) of Denver, Colorado; three nephews and two nieces.

Dave was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00AM followed by the Mass of Celebration of Life at 10:30AM on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 1065 E. Live Oak Road, Schertz, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska, 1312 Peger Road, Fairbanks, Alaska 99709.
