David Callaway, Sr.

David Monroe Callaway, Sr, 91, of New Braunfels, TX, went home to be with the Lord and be reunited with his beloved wife of 28 years, Mary Ann Dobernecker Callaway on February 12, 2021. David was born on March 6, 1929 in Duncan, OK, the eldest son of the late Charles Frederick Callaway and Lillie Mae Calhoun Callaway. David served his country in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S Air Force after which he married and settled in San Antonio, TX. A government employee specializing in aircraft mechanics at Kelly AFB, he retired from Civil Service after a long successful career. David was a simple man who enjoyed gardening, making blackberry jam, birdwatching, word puzzles, solitaire, whittling small figures, and keeping a nicely manicured yard. His strong work ethic was very evident. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter, Carolyn Luetger, brother, Kenneth Callaway, sisters, Laquita Hackett and Yvonne Bragg, and grandson, Brandon Callaway. David leaves behind to cherish his memory, 7 children and their spouses, James “Dan” Callaway (Yvonne) of Forest, VA, David M. Callaway, Jr (Tammy) of Pipe Creek, TX, Dennis M. Callaway of Schertz, TX, Dean M. Callaway of Mountain Home, TX, Billie Jean Custer of Poteau, OK, Charla M. Gray (Jon) of New Braunfels, TX, Janice M. Wood of Fredericksburg ,TX, a sister, Gayle Akers (Jerry) of Gonzales, TX, 20 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.  The family will receive visitors at Schertz Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM. A Funeral Service will begin at 10 AM with burial to follow at Mission North Cemetery.
