David Roger Bird

David “Dave” Roger Bird of Garden Ridge, Texas passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024 at the age of 82. Dave, the son of Marion and Alma (Kleen) Bird, was born and raised in Trivoli, IL. 

Dave had a long and fulfilling career and family life. After graduating from Farmington High School in 1959, he began working in the family’s grain elevator business in Gilson, IL. From there, he ran bulldozers for Ed Williams Construction and later worked for Caterpillar in Peoria, where he was part of demonstration team that traveled the United States. 

Dave moved his family to Portland, TX in the 1970’s where he began a career as an equipment salesman for the Holt Caterpillar dealership in Corpus Christi. After retiring from Holt, he started his own equipment sales business specializing in heavy pipelayers. Dave was a proud patriotic American. He was a man of his word who valued a handshake. He loved his workshop where he spent hours tinkering with old M1 Garand rifles and woodworking. 

Most of all, he cherished his friends and family. He will be dearly missed. Dave is survived by his beloved wife Judy (Thompson) Bird, his sons David and Darin, daughter-in-law Michelle (Stevens) Bird, and his granddaughters Jordan and Jamie Bird. 

The family wishes to thank all of those who have provided support during this difficult time. A funeral and visitation to celebrate Dave’s life will be held at the Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz, TX on November 2, 2024 at 1:00pm.
