Colonel Lawrence Conques, USAF Retired, age 89 of Schertz, Texas passed away on April 9, 2011. He was born to Gerazime and Eva Dugas Conques on February 22, 1922, in Carencro, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 39 years, Ashton Gallagher Conques; his former spouse of nearly 27 years, Irene Ingersoll Conques; his parents; and four sisters: Hazel Conques, Elmire Conques Guilbeau, Ruby Conques Benton, and Lou Conques Jarvie. He is survived by his and Irenes three children and families: Colonel Duane L.Conques, USAF Retired and his wife, the former Loula Frances Solomon, of Schertz,Texas; Deborah Ann Conques Burns of Hollywood, California; Anthony L. Conques and his wife, the former Kathleen June Mulvihill, of Fairfax, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. He held the following degrees: BS in Military Science, University of Maryland; MA in Public Administration, George Washington University; and Juris Doctorate (LLD), Georgetown University Law Center. He was a member of the Virginia and West Virginia Bars. Colonel Conques completed the Air Tactical School, Air Command and Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He served in the military from 1939 to 1972, a period spanning World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. During his long and distinguished career, he was assigned to several key staff positions at Headquarters, United States Strategic Air Forces on Guam and its advanced echelon in Tokyo after the armistice with Japan was signed; Headquarters, Third Air Force in South Ruislip, London, England; Headquarters, Allied Air Forces Central Europe, Fontainebleau, France; Headquarters, United States Air Force Directorate of Military Personnel in the Pentagon; and the Philippines Mutual Defense Board in Manila. He served for six years in the Pentagon as Chief of the Congressional Inquiry Division in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force (SAFLL) and later as Assistant Chief of Staff, Headquarters, United States Air Forces in Europe, Wiesbaden, Germany, where he retired in June, 1972. Colonel Conques received numerous recognitions including three Legion of Merit medals and a Congressional citation for his exemplary liaison work with the members of Congress. Following his Air Force career, he served for many years as the Director of Public Safety in Charleston, West Virginia, where he also practiced law. Then he retired to his mini-ranch in New Braunfels, Texas, where he and his wife bred and raised horses for years, having two nationally ranked in dressage and several winning race horses. He was president of the Carencro High School Class of 1939. He excelled in basketball, volleyball, and track. He coached Little League, Babe Ruth League, and 18 and under baseball teams to several championships in Fairfax, Virginia. He was an avid LSU, Spurs, Cowboys, and Yankees fan. Graveside Services & Interment were held at 10:30 A. M. on April 19 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, with full military honors.
