Col. (USAF Ret.) James William Mangum went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 28, 2011. He was a resident of Schertz, Texas for the past 17 years. He was born on August 24, 1924 in Lorena, Texas and later moved to Waco. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He received his wings and commission on January 7, 1944. He served in the United States Air Force for 34 years, chiefly as a pilot instructor. James was a member of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Seguin. Among his other accomplishments, James was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #756 of Hondo, the Scottish Rite Temple of San Antonio, the Alzafar Shrine of San Antonio, and the National Honor Society. James was preceded in death by his parents, J.M. and Maud Mangum, and sisters, Winnie Moore and Louise Coone. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bobbie. James is also survived by four daughters: Barbara Westmoreland and husband, Boyce of Waco, Judy Wilks and husband, George of Schertz, Jo Raher and husband, Bill of Fort Worth and Donna Howe and husband, Tom of San Antonio; seven grandchildren: Jamie Glinski and husband, Robert of Waco, Jody Westmoreland and wife, Paula of Hatton, North Dakota, Kimberly Walker of Cibolo, Kevin Wilks of San Antonio, Brian Raher and wife, Pam of Saginaw, Texas, Sarah Howe and husband, Gary Fletcher of San Antonio and Thomas Howe, Jr. of Austin; nine great-grandchildren: Reagan and Rorilynn Glinski, Bailey and Skylar Westmoreland, Halle Walker, Presley and Dylan Fletcher and James and Tyler Raher and his sister, Juanita Nixon and husband, Robert of Waco. Visitation will be at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Services, conducted by Chaplain Jeremy Roy, will be held at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 PM. Family and friends are invited to meet at the Mangum home following the burial.
