Claudette Lake

December 7, 1936 — May 20, 2021

Claudette (Bruce) Lake, age 84 of Garden Ridge, Texas went to be with the Lord Jesus on Thursday, May 20, 2021 following a long journey with Alzheimer’s. She often voiced her retirement goal was to get to know the Lord so deeply that going to heaven would feel like a reunion. She is now with the One she loved so much throughout her life, for which we rejoice despite our tears.

Claudette was born December 7, 1936 in Jacksonville, Texas to Clyde and Pearl Bruce. She was the oldest of two children. Early in her life, her family moved to Enid, Oklahoma where she eventually met and married Jerome (Jerry) Glen Lake, her husband of 63 years, while he was attending USAF pilot training. During their 21 year military career, she traveled the country with him, raising three children and working toward her three degrees, all from the University of Oklahoma, eventually receiving a PhD in English Literature. Her love of education led her to teach at both the secondary and college levels, and in the church. She last taught at the University of Maryland, College Park, before moving to Garden Ridge to be close to family. Claudette’s lifelong loves were God, His Word, His church, and her family and friends, teaching, reading, and writing. Along with her beautiful smile and unique laughter, she shared all these things as a legacy to all those who had the blessing of knowing her.

Claudette is survived by her devoted husband, Jerry Lake; her daughter, Judy Wasserman and husband, Mark; her son, Jay Lake and wife, Hye-Young; her 5 grandchildren: Joshua Lake and wife, Rachel, Jennifer Nation and husband, Tim, JennaLee Wasserman, John Wasserman, and Nathan Wasserman; her 4 great-children: Cameron and Isaiah Lake, Norah and Ella Nation; her brother, Carl Bruce and partner, Mary Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Pearl Bruce and her youngest son, Charles (Chip) Lake.

Her grave site memorial service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Monday, June 21, 2021 at 10:45am. In remembrance of Claudette, you are encouraged to donate to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels. The family extends a special thank you to Sodalis of Garden Ridge, and Hope Hospice, for their excellent care of Claudette and so many others. They helped us make her last few years pleasant and comfortable as she awaited seeing her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, face-to-face.
