Claude "Bud" Wheeler born June 9, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois passed away on April 19, 2019 in Schertz, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Irene Wheeler, his wife Margaret Wheeler and his granddaughter Dana Mitchell Tesalona.
Bud served in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a former Judson High School Teacher, changing careers; he became the Randolph Arts and Crafts Director and ultimately retired as the Youth Director at Randolph Air Force Base.
He attended Alamo Heights High School and then earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
When he was younger he enjoyed his flashy Ford Convertible, tooling through the Heights via Broadway, Harry Wurzbach, or other adjacent streets. However, he used this as a life lesson for his children, emphasizing the importance of following speed limits.
He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed watching professional football, beach volleyball, wrestling, golf and tennis. He enjoyed cheering for his team favorites the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.
Being married and devoted to his wife Margaret for over 50 years they enjoyed many trips together and family gatherings. Nuevo Laredo Marketplace and the Cadillac Bar were fond childhood memories for all his kids. We can now look back and admire his leadership ability for getting several children to behave in a hot vehicle for that length of travel. Later in life he replaced his sporty ride for a more suitable family car which was a large Lincoln Mark III with air conditioning! Unfortunately it was a two door so we soon learned to be contortionists to get into the back seat.
We are probably one of the few Texas Families that visited the briefly open Seven Seas Amusement Park in Arlington. Carlsbad Caverns and Amusement Park trips were special. If we traveled to a relative's house, he always had his tool kit or Swiss army knife with him. He would spend time doing small repairs never one to miss an opportunity to lend a helping hand.
Despite working long hours throughout his career, he always made the effort to take the family out to dinner, attending any of his kids' school activities, taking us to theater performances, college football, short-track auto racing, semi-pro football or local wrestling.
He also enjoyed his lunches with the retirees from Randolph throughout the years.
Bud was an honest, humble, caring individual and a proud Marine. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
He is survived by daughters, Fran and husband Frank Graves, Barbara Beck, Jan Beck, Beverly Wheeler, and son Roger and wife Emily Wheeler along with numerous nieces and nephews. Grandchildren Ryan Mitchell and wife Yolanda, Tara Merritt, Bryan Henneke and grandson-in-law Josh Tesalona; great-grandchildren Pablo, Diego, Kyndall, and Camille.
