Charles Tyler

CHARLES A. TYLER born June 7, 1920, passed away on May 22, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 98. Just 16 days shy of his 99th birthday. Depending on your relationship with Chuck, many of us were privileged to call him "Chuck", "Chief", "Bus", "Pops" and "PopPop". Chuck was born one of 14 children, the oldest of 9 boys, to Alfred and Elizabeth Tyler in Sommerville, Massachutes. Chuck left school at the age of 16 to work as a machinist in order to help his large family financially. Chuck would eventually earn his GED. Chuck enlisted into the Army on November 17, 1941, re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps and then enlisted into the Air Force. Chuck retired from the military on December 31, 1963, as a Special Weapons Troubleshooter for SAC earning the rank E-9 Chief Master Sergeant. After his Air Force retirement, Chuck spent 20 years with the U.S. Postal Service in West Cavina, California as a mail carrier until his retirement February 2, 1984. Chuck was also a Master Mason of the Loge Stability-Concorde #29/42 Paris, earning all of his degrees by 1959. Chuck was a member of the Elk's Lodge #1877 in Victorville, California and a member of The American Legion Post #345.

Chuck had a passion and love for baseball. Chuck played throughout Europe, Germany, and the US until the age of 43. He played baseball for the Air Force, semi-professionally, and professionally as a catcher. There was not a day that he did not have a baseball game on the TV if he could find one! On December 30, 1950, Chuck married Geraldine Virginia Foster in New Mexico and they raised two sons together while traveling the world with the Air Force. After Geraldine's passing May 16, 1988, Chuck moved to the lake in Kimberling City, Missouri to enjoy retirement. This is where he met and would later marry Barbara Jeanne Crandall March 12, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chuck and Barbara settled into married life in Victorville, California where they enjoyed spending time watching his sons, Bob and Larry, race motorcycles. In 1997, Chuck and Barbara moved to Texas to enjoy retirement, travel to his sons' races, and visit family.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Barbara; son: Larry & Pat Tyler of Spirit Lake, Idaho; daughter-in-law: Terry Tyler, of San Angelo, Texas; stepdaughter: Annette Griffin & husband Robin of Republic, Missouri; sisters: Marguerite Barnes of Covina, California, and Shirley Bell of Ben Salem, Pennsylvania; brothers: Leonard Tyler of Yucaipa, California, and Donald Tyler of The Pocinos, Pennsylvania; granddaughter: Patrice Blasko & husband Mike of Costa Mesa, California; step-grandsons: Eric Mertes & wife Rachel Loftin of Chautauqua, Kansas, and Nicholas Griffin & wife Bayli of Republic, Missouri; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Kolton, and Maverick Mertes; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, first wife Geraldine, son Robert Tyler, stepson Tracy Crandall, 6 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Services will be held June 6, 2019, at 1:00 pm at Schertz Funeral Home with his final resting place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetary with full military honors.
