Betty Syvertson

Betty Jane Syvertson, age 82, passed away at her home in San Antonio, surrounded by her daughters on Friday, October 12, 2018. She was born on June 1, 1936 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to James and Irene (Dokai) Ballas. She married Harold (Sy) Syvertson on October 25, 1958 in Bridgeport. Together they had three daughters. Betty met Sy while she was enlisted in the United States Air Force. They travelled the world, living in a number of countries and various states across the US. Betty truly lived life to the fullest. She will be fondly remembered as a woman who always made time for others and had a deep love for God and her church. She loved to do a variety of crafts and never hesitated to make special gifts. Later in life, she discovered a love for drawing and began making hand-drawn greeting cards. Many people received these wonderful mementos from her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sy; her sister Hellen Allen; her brothers George and John Ballas. She is survived by her brothers Nick and Steve Ballas; her daughters Diane Tennison, Donna Hafner, husband Steve and Deidre Hered and husband David. She is also survived by her Grandchildren Elizabeth Tennison, David and Meghan Campano, Jack Hered, a number of nieces and nephews, wonderful friends Mary Esther Nino & Doris Whisenhunt and a number of close friends at The Waterford and the Universal City United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends at an informal visitation on Thursday, October 18, 2018 between 4pm and 6pm at Universal City United Methodist Church. She will be buried with her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetary on Friday, October 19, 2018 with full military honors beginning at 9:45am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Betty's name to the Universal City United Methodist Church or to the Cancer & Heart Association.
