LCDR , USN (Ret) Bernard Crook, 84, beloved Husband, Father, and Grandad, passed away on August 20, 2018. He was born on February 13, 1934 in Manchester, England to Reginald and Olive (Thompson) Crook. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Flo; children Bruce (Elvira), Denise, and Brian (Jennifer); grandchildren Zach, Tori, Cody and Dylan; and dear friend Jose Barrera. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Shelagh (Alex) Dombroski .
Bernie graduated from Neptune High School in Neptune, NJ and earned a Bachelor's in Music Education from Trenton State Teachers College where he met his wife Flo. While there, he served as Junior and Senior Class President, became a member of Theta Nu Sigma fraternity and was a graduation speaker. Bernie served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years which included a tour of Vietnam and is a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal. During his Navy career, he particularly enjoyed his assignments of overseeing the Navy ROTC unit at Georgia Tech University and directing the Naval Science Department at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Bernie loved education and earned a Master's in English from Georgia State University and a Ph.D. in Technical Writing from the University of Texas at Austin. After retiring from the Navy, he enjoyed teaching English and Technical Writing at UTSA , Oklahoma State University and Texas Lutheran University.
Bernie was active in the cycling community, receiving special recognition in 2017 for his 30 years of participation in the Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic in New Braunfels. His love of music and books was instilled in his family who will miss him greatly.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am on September 4, 2018 at Schertz Funeral Home, followed by interment with military honors at 11:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bernie's name to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. A tree will be planted in Bernie's honor at the November 3, 2018 Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic.
