Ardel J. Couch of Converse, Texas surrounded by family and caregivers went to be with the Lord at the age of 86 on April 4, 2022.
Ardel Couch was born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 26, 1935, 25 minutes after his twin brother, Odel Julian Couch to Ernest Couch and Jewel Huddleston Couch. Ardel grew up in Shelbyville, Tennessee and graduated from Morristown High School where he and his brother played football. He later completed three years at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee where he met and fell in love with Willie Fay Johnson who he was married to for 54 years.
Ardel served over 26 years in the United States Army as a military policeman and reached the rank of Master Sergant. He served in Germany and had premier assignments at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in France and Belgium with his final assignment before retirement being at Fort DeRussy on Waikiki beach, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was also stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, in El Paso, Fort Sheridan, Illinois, served a year in Korea as well as Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He loved being on the beach every day at Fort DeRussy! After he retired from the military, he also continued to serve his country as a civilian with the department of defense at Camp Stanley in San Antonio until he retired.
He and his wife owned several antique shops in the 1990’s and they antiqued together. He loved to be busy and even in his early 80’s opened a used car dealership. He would go daily to the dealership and to auto auctions. He was a fighter and fought to live life to the fullest even when the doctor’s told us several times over the last four years that it was the end, he wasn’t having it!
He loved being out and about and even recently joked about going to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 76 downtown. He had a sense of humor and liked to tell stories of his military career. He still had military structure and would call his twin brother, daily at 7:00 pm. He was a great provider, loved his wife, children and grandchildren and would assist in any way he could no matter your age!
