Alfredo Contreras

March 24, 1932 — May 14, 2017

Alfredo ("Fred") Contreras was born to Jose and Maria Contreras on March 24, 1932 in Winters, Texas. He was the youngest of three brothers, including Emilio Contreras and Adolpho Conteras, and sister, Francis Contreras. On May 14, 2017 at the age of 85, he was called upon by the Lord peacefully in his sleep at home surrounded by his loving family. Fred grew up in the rural San Marcos, Texas area, where he met his wife Vicki, with whom he was married to for over 60 years. The year prior to his passing, Fred and Vicki were the guests of honor in a big 59th wedding anniversary party attended by many friends and family members. Fred served his country for over 20 years in the United States military. He first served in the Army, including service in the 82nd Airborne Division aka the "All American Division." He then dutifully served in the Air Force, and was last stationed in Washington, D.C., where he worked in the Office of Special Investigation. Upon his honorable discharge from the military in 1972, Fred and his wife Vicki founded Contreras Flowers & Gifts in Schertz, a retail flower shop which they owned and operated together for over 45 years. He enjoyed delivering flowers as that always brought happiness to those receiving them. As a longtime resident of Schertz, Fred was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd since 1972. He was also a member of several local civic organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, the Noon's Lions Club and the Schertz Volunteer Fire Department. He served as "Santa Claus" every Christmas for over 15 years for the City of Schertz, the Volunteer Fire department and for his own family's Christmas celebration every year. In his free time, Fred enjoyed relaxing at home with his family, going to local dances with his wife Vicki, and also enjoyed outdoor activities such as doing yard work. While he and his family had many dogs throughout the years, Fred's favorite was a miniature poodle named Elvis, the family's loyal protector. Fred was a loving and devoted husband and father, a dedicated servant of the local community and of his country, and a faithful servant of God. He will be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.
Fred is survived by his wife, Vicki, and two sons, Alfred Contreras and Jason Contreras.
A celebration of Fred's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1065 East Live Oak Rd., Schertz, Texas 78154. A burial service will follow at San Marcos Cemetery, where he will be eternally laid to rest.
