Alfred Muenchow

April 15, 1924 — September 25, 2017

Alfred Emil Muenchow, 93, beloved husband of Malinda (Rennspies) Muenchow for 71 years, devoted father of Glen and wife Beverly Muenchow, loving Opa to Chris Muenchow, Eric Muenchow and his wife Chesley, Jeff Muenchow and his wife Amber; cherished Grosse Opa to Abbey, Reagan, Carson, Brady, and Landon went to be with the Lord on September 25, 2017. Alfred was born to Alvin and Ella (Friedeck) Muenchow in Marion, Texas on April 15, 1924. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roy Muenchow; brothers, Simon, Melvin, Theodore, and Siegfried: sisters, May Schultz, Alice Haecker, and Aileen Bartoskewitz. Alfred grew up on the farm at various locations in and around the Guadalupe County area. He attended the Goebel School in the Zuehl community. Growing up as the 7th child in a farming family of eight meant working in the fields to help support the family and cutting the formal school education short, but this did not deter his quest for knowledge. He was an avid reader, kept up with current events and was a self-taught man in so many ways. As a teenager he worked in the Zuehl's garage pumping gas by hand and helped repair cars with front-end damage from the rough country roads. He also worked at Staffels Feed Store in downtown San Antonio near what is now known as Rivercenter Mall. Alfred was working at the downtown San Antonio Arsenal when he was called by the Navy to serve in WWII. Upon his return, he worked at Fort Sam Houston and then at Kelly Field from which he had his first retirement after 31 Years. He began his 2nd career with Hochheim Prairie Farm Mutual in La Vernia and served as Branch President until his retirement in 1989, after 15 years in the insurance business. In addition to these demanding jobs, Alfred also always had a farm, rented and farmed additional farmland, working evenings and weekends growing milo and cattle ranching. He was a 50+ year member of Herman Sons, VFW, served as president on the church council, and a generous supporter of many charitable organizations. He loved farming, raising cattle, gardening, fishing, traveling, church, dancing, oldtime & country music, and casino trips. He especially loved his family, playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and visiting with friends. He was a gifted storyteller and usually carried the conversation. When his grandsons would visit, they always would wonder what new game or activity Opa would come up with. This didn't change when the great grandchildren arrived, new games would be devised and even in his 90's you could see him on his knees playing with the kids. He always had lots of love to give but above all was deeply devoted to his childhood sweetheart and life long partner, Malinda.
